Here in the United Kingdom we are lucky because our drinking water is of the highest standard for drinking, with a high level of quality and is definitely amongst the best in the world. This means that we can turn on a tap and know for sure that the water that comes out is safe, clean and refreshing. To begin, our drinking (or potable) water originates from two simple sources, like surface waters, such as rivers and reservoirs, and also from the ground. Normally the water from the ground is less likely to be polluted than surface water. There are a number of possible sources of man made contaminants like those from industrial premises and sewage treatment works, or run off from agricultural land and from hard surfaces, such as roads, are not so obvious, or easily controlled. The water we use is full of natural contaminants, particularly inorganic contaminants that eminate from the land and rock as the water flows through and there is also some, pollution by both micro organisms and chemicals. Charlton Plumbers are trained professionals. There is another common way for this contamination to occur and that is by a process called back flow. Usually the cold water that is supplied to a home is under high pressure. This means that a bath can be filled and a garden can be watered quite quick. The water is only travelling one way. sometimes water can be sucked back through, say a garden hose that has been layed down during interruption to the water supply, and this will flow, back into the cold water mains. The water can now be contaminated with lots of foreign products such as, dirt, pesticides, plant food and lots more undesirables. A Charlton Plumber can fit check valves. To stop this from happening the water regulations now say that devices to stop back flow must be fitted. The example above needs something called a double check valve on the outside tap, which is a valve that will only allow water to flow one way, and will not let water flow back into the main supply.
